Ovation: If Chaz Bono Wins “Dancing With The Stars” It Will Be A Super Big Deal.
Way back in the days of television “variety shows” my favorites were the programs that contained “adult” humor … programs that other children were rarely allowed to watch but my cool parents would let me watch under their supervision, like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In, The Carol Burnett Show and the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The highlight of many peoples’ weeks was the Sonny & Cher Show. Like so many variety hours, this show featured guest stars, comedy sketches and musical numbers that were always very entertaining. I remember, vividly, the night that Sonny & Cher introduced their daughter, Chastity, to their television audience. She was a shy toddler and cute as a button but … actually more average than expected from television’s beloved husband and wife team. Hardly a big deal.
At the age of thirteen, as revealed in her book Family Outing Chastity came to the realization that she is gay. At eighteen, she came out to her parents as lesbian. No big deal.
In 1995, after years of being outed by the tabloid press, Chastity publicly declared her homosexuality in a cover story in The Advocate. No big deal.
In 2008, Chastity underwent female-to-male gender transition which was chronicled in the documentary Becoming Chaz which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has been nominated for three Emmy Awards. A little bit bigger deal.
Chastity Sun Bono’s transformation to Chaz Salvatore Bono was completed on May 7, 2010, when a California court granted his request for a gender and name change. Big deal!
And now it has been announced that Chaz will be competing on the 2011-2012 season of the hit reality competition Dancing with the Stars. Chaz will be the first transgender contestant in the history of the ABC program and will be paired with a female professional dancer. Bigger deal!
Or is it a big deal at all? Maybe people are beginning to embrace diversity more than we give them credit for. Perhaps Chaz’s appearance on the program will be “no big deal” and he’ll be like all the other guys and look like a silly dufus the first couple weeks before he really learns some moves.
If Chaz Bono wins Dancing with the Stars it will be a Super Big Deal!
