Ovation: Bauballs – A Festive Way To Raise Testicular Cancer Awareness.

12/14/2012

bauballsWhen we decorated our Christmas tree last week, we decided that it was time to part with some of our ornaments.  We had amassed a collection of almost 1,000 over the years and we decided that we didn’t have an emotional attachment or a memory assigned to many of them.  So, off they went.  We enjoy unwrapping the ornaments each year and remembering where they came from, who gave them to us or what occasion they celebrated.

There are a few ornaments on our tree that represent fundraisers.  For example, we have a beautiful glass ornament featuring a pink ribbon that commemorates breast cancer awareness and another from our local Chamber of Commerce.

This Christmas, Orchid Cancer Charity, is selling hand-crafted, shiny red “balls” to raise awareness of testicular cancer.  The London-based organization has been selling “Bauballs”.  The decorations were created by Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth while doing pro bono advertising work for the charity, an organization dedicated to fighting male cancers.

“Lots of men don’t walk to talk about things like this unless you make it funny.” – Matt Robinson

Similar to the annual “Movember” tradition where men grow mustaches to also promote testicular cancer awareness, the red ornaments use humor to bring attention to a serious cause.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that nearly 9,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2012. I f detected early enough, cure rates are nearly 99 percent.  Doctors recommend that men perform a self-check monthly to check for lumps.

While we sometimes joke about our Christmas ornament collection and often say that we “have a problem”, we intend to keep collecting them … apparently, until we have them all.  Unfortunately, we won’t be including a Bauballs in our collection any time soon … they’ve sold out.

Do you have any commemorative or fundraising ornaments on your Christmas tree?

  1. Just when you think you have seen it all. Too many Christmas carols whose words could be altered to fit the picture come to mind. Have a great one and travel safely. BTG

  2. You would need a “very private” tree to hang these types of ornaments on (perhaps in your adult bedroom?)

  3. You reminded me of the scene from “Birdcage” the movie with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. The soup bowls had some rather lewd pictures inside the bowl’s rim. Robin Williams’ character grabbed the soup ladle to cover up the pictures splashing soup into the bowls hiding them from his guests, the Senator and his wife.

  4. Oh, D&O I needed a good laugh. That is priceless. Truck nuts for trees! Priceless!

  5. This is hysterical! Sadly, you can’t hang ornaments on menorahs – it’s a fire hazard. I shudder to think what kind of ornaments I would search for if I had a tree to hang them on.
