Diatribe: Octomom Is Back On The Dole.
I know people who, by no fault of their own, find themselves on government assistance. These are the people for whom these programs were created. A death in the family, an injury or extreme medical condition, loss of a job or the need to care for loved ones are just a few reasons that people find themselves on welfare.
There are others, unfortunately, who I believe abuse the system. Government assistance is intended to provide short-term financial relieve to struggling citizens and their families. It is not supposed to be a source of income. While accepting these funds, recipients should be working damned hard to get back on their feet so that the money can help someone else.
Nadya “Octomom” Suleman has confirmed to the press that she is back on government assistance. Apparently the single mother of fourteen, who recently completed a stint in rehab, again thinks this will be a temporary situation.
“Going through recovery was an important step for me to take. Although it set me back financially a little bit, it was worth it. My choice to go back on assistance is only a temporary one. At this time my family needs the medical, dental and food assistance because it is so expensive.” – Nadya Suleman
Suleman, who came to international attention when she gave birth to octuplets in January 2009, has been on welfare before. In March of 2012 she began receiving government assistance to support her brood but the payments ended when she was able to earn money from various appearances and her infamous masturbation video.
The circumstances of Suleman’s high order multiple birth have led to much controversy in the field of assisted reproductive technology. She already had six other young children, was unemployed and on public assistance programs when the octuplets were born. Many expressed concern that her decision for more children as a single mother, and her doctor’s participation, would burden taxpayers via public support and it turns out that they were right.
Apparently, all the money that she earned from various appearances, from selling the rights to photographs of the babies and from selling her story is gone. Suleman will reportedly receive $1,800 per month to spend on food plus another $1,000 for emergency cash.
The octuplets will be four years old on January 26th. And now we’re all helping to care for them.
