Ovation: Britney Spears Dials It Back.
After quite a long time out of the spotlight, Britney Spears debuted a new video earlier this week. The title of the song is “Work B***h” and the video is quite sexy. Throughout the 3:55 video, Spears appears as a scantily clad, whip-wielding dominatrix, dressed in leather underwear and appearing in various bondage-themed situations, including a scene in which she holds leather-clad women on a leash. But the 32-year-old singer says she wishes she could dial back some of the sexual images.
Apparently, an original version of the video was even more risqué than the final cut until Spears finally had to draw the line. She has indicated in interviews that she’s being pushed further than she would like to be and that If it were completely up to her she would cut out the sex and make the video all about the dancing.
“A lot of sex goes into what I do. But sometimes I would like to bring it back to the old days when there was like one outfit through the whole video, and you’re dancing the whole video, and there’s like not that much sex stuff going on. Oh my god, we showed way more skin and did way more stuff for the video than what is actually there. Like, I cut out half the video because I am a mother and because, you know, I have children, and it’s just hard to play sexy mom while you’re being a pop star as well. “I just have to be true to myself and you know, feel it out when I do stuff. It’s about the dance and it’s about being old school, it’s like keeping it real and just making it about the dance. I’d love to do a video like that.” – Britney Spears, speaking about the video for her song “Work B***h”.
While other singers appear to be trying to “outshock” each others’ audience with bizarre antics, nudity, twerking, nip slips, performance art, meat dresses and other peculiar headline-grabbing stunts, I find this bit of news from Britney Spears shines a new light on her in comparison. She’ll never be the best singer, she’s far from the best dancer (as proven in this particular video), but she may well be the most mature performer in the running for today’s female pop music audience.
