Ovation: The World Needs More Tinney Davidsons – More Little Old Ladies Who Wave.
As a youngster, I lived in a house that was two doors down from the high school. It was up a rather steep hill and there was a large parking lot between my neighbor’s house and the school itself and, with the exception of school property, the neighborhood had no sidewalks. I could watch the older kids walking to and from school from the front windows of our house, either in the living room, the dining room or the front storm door, and every once in a while one of them would notice me and wave. More often than not, I’d duck back inside … but every once in a while I’d wave back.
Since 2007, Tinney Davidson has made herself comfortable in a chair at the front window of her Comox, British Columbia home every morning and waved to the high school teenagers as they walked to school. Then, in the afternoons on their walk home, she’s resumed her energetic waving to bring a smile to their faces even on their worst days.
“I love it. And they seem to love it also.” – Tinney Davidson.
Last Friday, Valentine’s Day, the eighty-four-year-old woman received quite a surprise when she was brought to a school assembly that had been organized solely to thank her for her years of friendliness. She was greeted with a warm welcome and given a big basket of homemade valentines before she and the students watched a video on a big screen in which teens expressed how much Tinney meant to them.
I imagine that her waving, that she and her late husband had started together, brings a welcome purpose and structure to her day. I think it’s really sweet that the school allowed the students to take time away from their studies to recognize Mrs. Davdison’s friendliness and the neighborly example that she has become.
The world needs more Tinney Davidsons … don’t you agree?
