Ovation: “Modern Family” Pays For Marriage Licenses In New York City.
The characters of Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker, the gay couple portrayed by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet on the award-winning ABC sitcom Modern Family will soon be married on this season’s two-part finale. This morning, a sneak peak of the celebration was aired, the stars participated in a cake decorating contest and made a special announcement:
In one of the most warm and fuzzy publicity stunts that I’ve seen in a long time, the network announced on Good Morning America that the show will cover the cost of all marriage licenses and wedding ceremonies taking place on Monday, May 12 at the New York City Clerk’s office (141 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. EST)!
The waiting period in the State of New York between when a marriage license is issued and when it can be used is twenty-four hours so the line at the Clerk’s office today will include couples waiting both to procure a license and to get married by the Clerk using licenses that they already have. Marriage licenses in the State of New York are good for sixty days.
What a wonderful and generous surprise! Surely, the network will receive criticism from those who oppose marriage equality but the rest of us are just as happy for Mitch and Cam as we are for all of our other friends who get married.
