Diatribe: Michigan Lottery Winner Continues To Accept Government Assistance.

I’ve not been so lucky when it comes to winning the lottery.  I buy a ticket every week but have yet to win a big jackpot.  I’m reminded of this old tale …

Sam was in dire trouble. His business had gone bust and he was in serious financial trouble. He was so desperate he decided to pray for help.

He began, ‘God, please help me. I’ve lost my business and if I don’t get some money, I’m going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the lottery.’ Lottery night came and Sam didn’t win.

Again Sam prays, ‘God, please let me win the lottery! I’ve lost my business, my house and I’m going to lose my car as well.’ Lotto night comes and Sam still has no luck.

Once again, he prays, ‘My God, why have you forsaken me?? I’ve lost my business, my house, and my car. My wife and children are starving. I don’t often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. PLEASE just let me win the lottery this one time so I can get my life back in order.’

Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open. Sam is confronted by the voice of God Himself: ‘Sam,’ says God, ‘meet Me halfway on this. Buy a bloody ticket.’

I’ve have been lucky, however, in many other ways.  I’ve always been able to afford adequate food (far too much), shelter and clothing.  I’ve worked hard and tried to “do the right thing”.  Of course, I’ve made mistakes with my money on more than one occasion, but I’ve always been lucky enough to pick myself up, dust myself off, and get by.

Many Americans are not so fortunate.  As recently as January of last year, the number of people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“food stamps”) was at a record 44.2 million.  One in seven Americans is reportedly receiving food stamps and one in three who are eligible do not receiving them.  The intention of the program is to help feed the poor and needy … not Michigan Lottery winners like Amanda Clayton.

I think that what this woman is doing is extraordinarily selfish.  While not illegal, I find it despicable for her to continue to use public assistance after her bank account has been fattened by chance.

What are your thoughts?
