Ovation: David Burtka – Partner, Father, Friend, Performer & Chef … But Not Yet A Husband.

Perhaps known more for his relationship with television and Broadway’s Neil Patrick Harris than for his own work on stage and screen, David Burtka is an accomplished man in his own right.  Born and raised in Michigan, and trained in acting at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Burtka made his own Broadway debut in 2003 opposite Bernadette Peters in Gypsy after having previously won the Clarence Derwent Award for most promising male performer.

In 2002, Burtka made his television debut with a guest role on The West Wing and an appearance on Crossing Jordan.  In a second-season episode of (one of my favorite sit-coms) How I Met Your Mother, he reprised his role as “Scooter”, the former high school boyfriend of Alyson Hannigan’s character, Lily.  Several months after this appearance it was reported that he received the part because of a romantic relationship with one of the series’ stars, Harris.  It was this speculation that, eventually, led Harris to publicly acknowledge that he is gay in a cover story in People magazine.  While Burtka never commented publicly on the relationship, Harris later announced that they were living together.  They appeared together in public, for the first time as an official couple, at the 2007 Emmy Awards.

As of 2009, Burtka all but quit acting to pursue a career as a chef, graduating from the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena, California, and soon began running his own catering company.  In August 2010, the couple announced that they were expecting twins via a surrogate mother and twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace were born the following October.

Having long ago proposed marriage to each other, Burtka and Harris have yet to tie the knot.  Harris, the more vocal of the pair, has said that they didn’t want to go marching down the street with camera crews and they wouldn’t want to get married to be an example.

I have a great deal of respect and admiration for David Burtka.

  1. As my Nana would have said to NPH, ‘Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?’

Seriously, I love these two for being fearlessly, honestly and openly gay, and quite public about it.

Nice article. But it contains a big mistake. He only has 2 children, the other children are not his, it’s his ex’s childen. As NPH put it, his ex had “gone through the surrogacy-process on his own”, although Burtka naturally “helped raise them” while they were a couple. Burtka said he’s like a “close uncle” to them and they actually still see each other regularly. Burtka have NO legal rights to his ex children ( remember this is along time ago, the legal rights where diffrent towards those issue when it came to gays rights

They make me so proud.. A shining example of a happy healthy couple, who are raising children in a happy home.. Sure makes the far right’s yells of how bad same sex couples are for children fly right out the window.

  4. Thanks for sharing. I did not know his background. I love these two and how they show the world a healthy strong relationship.
