Diatribe: The Surprise Ending Of Janeane Garofalo’s “Joke” Marriage.

Marriage equality has been in the news a lot lately.  Earlier this month, voters in four states agreed to extend the rights of civil marriage to same-sex couples within their borders, a challenge to California’s Proposition 8 will reach the Supreme Court by the end of the month and many challenges to the so-called Defense of Marriage Act are racing through the court system.  Simultaneously, groups opposed to marriage equality are spending millions and millions of dollars (that could be better spent elsewhere) and untold numbers of hours fighting progress because their marriages are somehow being threatened.

While so many couples work, dream and worry about the federal rights denied to them by their inability to enter into a civil marriage, it is incomprehensible that someone could be married for twenty years and not even know it!

Janeane Garofalo and writer/producer Rob Cohen recently discovered that they had been married for the past twenty years and didn’t know it.  The 44-year-old comedic actress said that she married Cohen in Las Vegas as “a joke” and didn’t realize that the marriage was legitimate.

“We got married drunk …. We dated for a year, and we got married at a [Las Vegas] drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go to the downtown courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew? We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something.” – Janeane Garofalo

That’s not just drunk … that’s stupid.

As marriage equality continues to be debated in conversations around the world, it’s understandable that some people are unable to distinguish the difference between the sacraments of a religious marriage and the rights of a civil marriage agreement.  It’s less understandable that many don’t understand the difference between a “wedding” and a marriage.  But it’s incomprehensible to think, while so many are fighting for the right to marry, that someone could get so drunk that they would get married as a joke.

Marriage is not a joke.  Those who don’t take it seriously are foolish.

Do you really believe she didn’t know she was married for all those year?

  1. Yes, I believe her. Yes, it happens and when gay marriage becomes equal you’ll have gay couples making the same dumb/drunken decisions. Why has no one commented or noticed that they if they were soooo drunk, how did they go to a drive-thru wedding chapel? Were they in a cab? Was someone else driving?

    • You make a good point! Drunk is not only for straight people!

I think I read that they WERE in a cab.

Wouldn’t you think that, in the course of twenty years, one or both of them would have received something in the mail? Maybe from the IRS?

  2. Hubby & I always file as single people even though we are a married couple. One of us claims the rent, the other claims the RRSP’s, etc. I can imagine Janeane getting married as a joke – I think she is a laugh riot!
