Diatribe: Rocky Mountain Oyster Beer.

BULL-TESTICLE-BEER-largeIn the mid-1970s, Americans were asked to take the Pepsi Challenge.  Usually set up in a shopping mall or other public location, a Pepsi representative would set up a table with two blank cups … one containing Pepsi and one with Coca-Cola.  Random passersby were encouraged to taste both colas and select which drink they preferred after which the identity of each was revealed.  The result of the test leaned toward a consensus that Pepsi was preferred by more Americans.  We used to take the tests on our own and I could always tell the difference.

There are sommeliers who can tell from just one sip from what vineyard a wine was distributed.  Others can discern different brands of coffee and some take pride in their ability to tell the difference between different beers.  And now the beer drinkers might want to learn to distinguish the taste of beer made with real bull testicles.

Denver’s Wynkoop Brewing Company is preparing to launch its signature Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout.  What started as an April Fool’s Day prank became a reality last October when the brewery tapped the first keg.

Apparently, after the prank was released last spring brewers and beer critics who thought the beer was for real, loved the idea and wanted samples.  So did many patrons.

Interestingly, Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout will be sold only in two-packs.  What does it taste like?

“Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is an assertive foreign-style stout, slightly viscous, with a deep brown color. It has equally deep flavors of chocolate syrup, Kahlua, and espresso, along with a palpable level of alcohol and a savory umami-like note. It finishes dry and roasted with a fast-fading hop bite.” – Wynkoop Brewing Company

The beer is made with Colorado-grown base malts, roasted barley, seven specialty malts and Styrian Goldings hops.  There’s also a small dose of sea salt added to give the beer an extra layer of Rocky Mountain oyster flavor and additional texture … and bull testicles.

Will you be buying a two-pack of this beer any time soon?

  2. Um ……………………………………………………. No.

  3. The chocolate, espresso and Kahlua sound great, just leave out the meat.

  4. Sounds like a ballsy move!
