Diatribe: Playing Soccer And Marten Bites.

On Sunday, just a few minutes into a top division match in Switzerland, a marten dashed onto the field. The sharp toothed, weasel-like creature created havoc as it managed to evade capture by players and officials alike before hiding beneath the spectators’ stands.

When our kids were younger they played soccer.  Playing soccer has many benefits for children that are not offered by other sports.  Soccer players learn about teamwork, about strategizing and planning ahead and they get a lot of exercise while they do it.  The cardiovascular workout that results from a soccer match is enough to wear out the average ten-year-old so they get a good night’s sleep.  They get to be outdoors, with other children, and there’s a good chance that even the slowest among them will get to play in almost every game.

The biggest nuisance that our kids encountered on the soccer field was a big gully to the side of the playing area.  If a ball went out-of-bounds … it REALLY went out-of-bounds.  There were cuts and bruises that needed attention but I never once saw a kid suffer from a wild animal bite.

On Sunday, just a few minutes into a top division match in Switzerland, a marten dashed onto the field.  The sharp toothed, weasel-like creature created havoc as it managed to evade capture by players and officials alike before hiding beneath the spectators’ stands.

When the marten reappeared a bit later, FC Zurich defender Loris Benito took a dive and grabbed it but the furry creature bit him as he carried it off the field.

“In hindsight, it was obviously somewhat foolish of me. Who knows what diseases the animal had, but I wanted to play the match and now simply trust in my immune system.” – Loris Benito

After Benito’s his bloody finger was tended to, the critter returned to the playing field yet again, but this time the goalkeeper grabbed him without incident thanks to his gloves and removed him safely from the field.

Zurich won the match, 4-0, so Benito doesn’t holding any hard feelings against the marten and has suggested that they make it their new team mascot.

“We have the lion. But the marten has brought us luck.” – Loris Benito

I think it’s really cute and really quite fast.
