Ovation A Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton Reunion
Last month marked the thirty-year anniversary of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s famous duet “Islands in the Stream”. Written by the Bee Gees and inspired by the Ernest Hemingway novel. The record became certified Platinum and was named one of the number one songs of the year. It still tops CMT’s poll of the best country duets of all time.
Later, the duo recorded “Real Love” for Parton’s album of the same name. While it topped the U.S. country singles charts in August 1985, it did not do as well on the pop singles charts as “Islands in the Stream” had done and stalled at number ninety-one on the Billboard Hot 100. An HBO concert special, Real Love, was filmed during a nine-city tour and a music video was produced using footage from the special.
Next month, they’ll team up again for the title song of Rogers’ You Can’t Make Old Friends, his first country album in seven years.
“What a thrill it was for me to work again with my buddy, Dolly Parton, and what a special song. Working with Dolly is always a little like going home. Everything felt comfortable.” – Kenny Rogers
I enjoy pretty much everything that she does and I anticipate that this duet will be just as good as those that they’ve recorded in the past. They’re voices blend quite well, as do their personalities, and when they enjoy singing together I think the audience enjoys listening.
