Ovation: Britney Spears Dials It Back.

britney_spears_nt_131002_16x9_608After quite a long time out of the spotlight, Britney Spears debuted a new video earlier this week.  The title of the song is “Work B***h” and the video is quite sexy.  Throughout the 3:55 video, Spears appears as a scantily clad, whip-wielding dominatrix, dressed in leather underwear and appearing in various bondage-themed situations, including a scene in which she holds leather-clad women on a leash.  But the 32-year-old singer says she wishes she could dial back some of the sexual images.

Apparently, an original version of the video was even more risqué than the final cut until Spears finally had to draw the line.  She has indicated in interviews that she’s being pushed further than she would like to be and that If it were completely up to her she would cut out the sex and make the video all about the dancing.

“A lot of sex goes into what I do.  But sometimes I would like to bring it back to the old days when there was like one outfit through the whole video, and you’re dancing the whole video, and there’s like not that much sex stuff going on.  Oh my god, we showed way more skin and did way more stuff for the video than what is actually there.  Like, I cut out half the video because I am a mother and because, you know, I have children, and it’s just hard to play sexy mom while you’re being a pop star as well.  “I just have to be true to myself and you know, feel it out when I do stuff.  It’s about the dance and it’s about being old school, it’s like keeping it real and just making it about the dance. I’d love to do a video like that.” – Britney Spears, speaking about the video for her song “Work B***h”.

While other singers appear to be trying to “outshock” each others’ audience with bizarre antics, nudity, twerking, nip slips, performance art, meat dresses and other peculiar headline-grabbing stunts, I find this bit of news from Britney Spears shines a new light on her in comparison.   She’ll never be the best singer, she’s far from the best dancer (as proven in this particular video), but she may well be the most mature performer in the running for today’s female pop music audience.

  1. not a fan at all, never have been.
I don’t think she’s a good singer at all, and she’s mostly known, especially now, for all sorts of things other than her “music.”

    • Most will certainly agree that her singing voice is not her strong suit. Sadly, she’s not a particularly good dancer anymore either … as evidenced by this latest video.

  2. Reading your post, I focus on her comment “she wishes she could dial back some of the sexual images….” Well, my answer would be then do so.

    • I agree. Of course she has a responsibility to uphold all the agreements she’s made and to an extent keep her team employed but, at the end of the day, it’s highly unlikely that someone is holding a gun to her head and making her wear leather underwear. I can only imagine what it was that she actually “objected” to!

  3. Sounds like she needs to read the open letter to Miley from Sinead Oconners….

    • Admittedly, I’ve never paid much attention to Sinead O’Connor thinking of her as a bit of a one-hit-wonder, but she does have some good advice to offer in her letter to Miley Cyrus that could serve Britney Spears and others quite well. It’s ok to say “no” and to say it again and again. Not only does Britney Spears have a responsibility to her record label and her fans, she has a bigger responsibility to her children and possible grandchildren. Can you imagine seeing videos of YOUR grandmother whipping other women in a music video?

Thanks for mentioning O’Connor’s letter. And thanks for reading!

  4. The dialing back with all these female stars needed to start a long
time ago (are you listening Madonna?). My boys had a punk rock band and
were actually clothed. Strange clothes (the bright orange leisure suit is still
talked about) but all their parts were covered.

  5. It’s a start, hopefully others will follow!
