Diatribe: Fabricating Bigotry And Homophobia When There’s Already Too Much.

InviteAnother miserable case of someone creating drama for the sake of publicity was recently revealed to be a hoax when K-98.3’s Steve Harper and his “Morning Show” co-host, Leeana, confessed to creating a homophobic response to a child’s birthday party invitation and publicizing it.  The party invite made headlines last week because of the response allegedly sent by a mother to the two dads of her son’s classmate.  After the Long Island radio station first published the phony photo, it was shared across the internet and covered by the media.  Readers expressed their disgust and offered support to the same-sex parents of the birthday girl.  On Friday, the “Morning Show” duo posted the following apology not on the station’s website:

“Dear K-98.3 Listeners, On Wednesday, we told you the story of Sophia’s birthday party, and one parent’s objection to the same-sex household of Sophia’s parents.  We also posted the invitation on our Facebook page, and invited comments from our followers.  This story was, in fact, totally fictitious, and created by the two of us.  This was done without the knowledge of K-98.3 management or ownership.  We were attempting to spur a healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic, but we made a mistake by misleading our listeners into thinking that this specific situation actually existed.  We are very sorry that we perpetuated this falsehood, even after it was clear that it had taken on a ‘life of its own.’  We deeply apologize for violating your trust, and we will work hard to regain that trust.  Sincerely, Steve & Leeana.” – Steve Harper and Leeana of K-98.3’s “Morning Show”.

Many are calling for the hosts to be fired.  I’m inclined to believe that their apology is sincere.  I’m not convinced that there was any malice in their actions other than the fact that they didn’t confess sooner.  For sure, the stunt got them noticed and probably garnered much more attention than they anticipated.

Sadly, it’s not difficult to believe that a seven-year-old girl might receive a hateful response like this from the parent of a classmate.  Undoubtedly, same-sex parents bravely encounter very real difficulties when confronted by people who don’t understand their family.  It’s really quite disgusting that a pair of disc jockeys thought it would “spur a healthy discourse” if they fabricated bigotry and homophobia when there’s already too much.

Do you think Steve Harper and Leeana should be fired?

UPDATE 02/17/14: Steve Harper and Leeana’s morning show was suspended.

  1. Bigotry has to be carefully taught. In my view, to combat it, the arguments are much more powerful if the message is one based on truth and sincerity. The are also more powerful with action than words. So, my reaction to the story is more negative given its approach. If they want to call bigotry into question, the best example by far, is the Dallas sportscaster monologue on the gay college football player who is one the best players in the country. That is one of the best speeches you will ever see on any topic.

  2. Well, that’s just f*cked up.
