Ovation: Because Of Continued Ban Of LGBT Adults, Walt Disney World Pulls Support From Boy Scouts Of America.

DisneyGayBoyScoutsThe last place that I worked had a program that encouraged employees to donate to charity by matching, to a limit, any monetary donations up to a certain dollar amount.  They would also donate cash if we volunteered for a certain amount of time for a number of pre-approved charities.  Many employees took advantage of the program, mostly because they were volunteering anyway, and their charity was on the list.

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, has a similar program.  It’s also become the latest business to end its support of the Boy Scouts of America because of its continued refusal to end its ban on openly-LGBT adults.  The theme park has announced that, beginning in 2015, it will no longer help fund local Scout troops in support of employees’ volunteer work as part of its “Ears to You” matching-gift program.

Last spring, the Boy Scouts of America’s National Council voted to end the group’s long-time ban on openly gay youth but reaffirmed its ban on openly-LGBT adults serving as volunteers or leaders in the organization.  As a results, gay scouts are now welcome but are also kicked out of the organization after their eighteenth birthday.

“We’re never happy to see Scouting suffer as a result of the BSA’s anti-gay policy, but Disney made the right decision to withhold support until Scouting is fully inclusive.  Scouts for Equality will continue to advocate for a fully inclusive membership policy, to help build a stronger Scouting community that is eligible for the support of Corporate America.” – Zach Wahls, Co-Founder of Scouts for Equality

Walt Disney World’s parent company makes clear in its corporate Standards of Business Conduct that it and its affiliates do not allow “any form of harassment or discrimination on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identification, national origin, age, marital status, covered veteran status, disability, pregnancy or any other basis prohibited by applicable law.”

Walt Disney World Resorts have also endorsed legislation in Florida to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the state of Florida and joins companies including Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Major League Soccer, Merck, Intel and UPS who have also ended their funding of Boy Scouts of America because of the organization’s discriminatory policy.  I, for one, hope this list continues to grow
