Ovation: “The Beygency”.

I’ve been a fan of Saturday Night Live since the original Not Ready For Primetime Players first brought late-night cutting-edge humor to network television. Over the years, what was often controversial comedy became less so, and then controversial again, and then even trite. Now in its thirty-ninth season, the sketch comedy program still has its ups and downs but, now that we have DVRs we can skip past the downs.

In last night’s mostly average installment, I found one pre-recorded segment to be particularly amusing … “The Beygency”.

The mock movie trailer began with host Andrew Garfield playing a man who admits to not loving Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” and then discovering that his confession put him at risk of being eliminated The Adjustment Bureau style. A surprise appearance by 24’s Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub who pay the ultimate price for their musical opinions add to the comedy.

Every once in a while, amidst the clinkers, SNL still makes me smile. How about you?

  1. I have enjoyed SNL through the years, but typically they have two or three extremely funny sketches intermixed with so-so ones. It is great when they hit the mark, though, with a news-relevant parody.
