Ovation: 1600 Pandas World Tour.
I love flash mobs (see here and here) and I love pandas. I can’t think of anything that would grab my attention faster than a panda flash mob! Yesterday, a display of 1,600 papier-mâché pandas filled the arrivals hall at Hong Kong airport as part of a charity campaign to promote conservation of the endangered bears. The gathering was the first of a series of events planned across the city as part of a month-long “1600 Pandas World Tour” campaign. The exhibit, designed by French sculptor Paulo Grangeon, has already been displayed in other cities including Berlin, Paris and Taipei but the pandas’ stop in Hong Kong is special because some of the actual bears call the city home. Grangeon’s pandas have been photographed in front of landmarks in more than twenty countries.
Grangeon began the project in 2008 in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness of the panda’s plight by creating one panda statue for each of the remaining pandas still living worldwide. As their natural habitat dwindles (they now only live in a small mountain range in south-central China), and because they have difficulty breeding in captivity, their numbers are sure to quickly fall. A visual aid like this can certainly appeal to the masses.
What a great idea! Seeing that many pandas at once can do nothing but bring more awareness to their future!
