Diatribe: The Hot Convict.

Jeremy MeeksSadly, it seems that many of us have been programmed to believe that beautiful people have a head start on their less attractive peers.

Studies completed as far back as the 1970s indicate that attractive people are treated more favorably than those considered less attractive in many aspects of life.  Beautiful people are often viewed as healthier.  Some believe that it’s easier for attractive people to find mates as their good looks might signal reproductive fitness.  They’re often considered more intelligent, socially dominant, persuasive, likeable and trustworthy.

Last week Jeremy Meeks, 30, was arrested on five weapons charges and one gang charge.  The Stockton, California, Police Department posted his mug shot on Facebook and the photo went viral because of Meeks’ supposedly “sexy” looks.

This isn’t the first time Meeks has been arrested.  He’s already served a nine-year prison sentence for grand theft auto and a two-year sentence for grand larceny.  Meeks was one of four men taken into custody during Operation Ceasefire, a mission to curb a recent increase in shootings and robberies in the Weston Ranch area of Stockton.

In the nation’s courtrooms, physically attractive defendants are often less likely to be perceived as guilty when they’ve been charged with a crime.  Even when they are found guilty, attractive defendants receive more lenient sentences and have lower bails and fines imposed on them.

Wouldn’t it be terrible if Meeks … who a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department deemed “one of the most violent criminals in the Stockton area” … was found not guilty or got a light sentence just because he was deemed to be attractive?  Personally, I don’t see it and it seems to me that a viral mug shot will make the assembly of an impartial jury impossible should the need arise.

I am over the sexy convict. He is a felon. Yes, he attractive. That is a given. I notice that in most of the pictures online they crop his face…. He has horrible neck tattoos. He is, again I reiterate, a felon. I expect that his popularity will continue. These people that are willing to “rehabilitate” him and those that make innuendos about his criminal past and being his cell mate…… DISGUSTED. I can’t say enough online to express my disgust with this………… Is that a “tear drop” under his eye? Does that really carry the same meaning as we know is assigned from movies and lore??? A former “Crips” member???? REALLY PEOPLE!!!!

    • His family has started an online fundraising campaign to raise money for his legal defense. You would not enjoy reading the messages that his supporters include with their donations.

[Does the teardrop tattoo mean that he’s killed someone or is that folk lore?]

Everything I read says it does mean he has killed someone. He has supposedly reformed from gang life and found the lord…… I am happy for him, but the online campaign to raise money will soon part foolish people from their money.

        • I’m not happy for him … not at all. Saying you’ve “found the Lord” has become the same as a Get Out Of Jail Free card in the game of Monopoly. It seems that all one has to do is say those few words and people feel ‘oh, OK then … it’s all good’ and all is forgiven. Of course he “found the Lord” … he got caught! It doesn’t make him any less of a criminal in the eyes of the law. I really hate to think that his favorable mug shot will favorably influence his future.
